The Garmin GPSMAP 696 is a clean-sheet device that takes aviation portables to the next level. It has a gigantic, 7-inch portrait screen where you can display information like airways, electronic charts and weather. One of the many new features is an IFR map mode that displays a chart similar to standard enroute charts. The IFR map mode shows all the important features -- such as victor airways, jet routes, MEAs and leg distances -- and Garmin has gone the extra mile by adding major visual reference points like rivers, state boundards, highways and railroad tracks. Another key feature is Garmin FliteCharts that lets you see an entire approach plate on the Garmin 696 display. FliteCharts will tempt you to reduce the amount of paper in the cockpit, which is OK if you use the charts in accordance with AC90-78 since the 696 has Class I/Class II Electronic Flight Bag capability.
Garmin's newest portable GPS is their best yet. Combining advanced glass cockpit features with Garmin's biggest screen ever, the new GPSMAP 696 is truly a portable multi-function display (MFD). In one unit, Garmin has combined moving map, XM weather, terrain alerts, charts, airport information and much more.
Big screen The 7" diagonal screen with an 800x480 resolution, is the best screen available for portable GPS units. This enables the Garmin 696 to perfectly display weather, terrain and simulated instruments, and now IFR approach plates. Obviously, Garmin would have it no other way, the screen is very bright and extremely visible even in direct sunlight.
User friendly controls The Garmin 696 has easy to use controls resembling those of Garmin panel GPS units commonly found in more modern aircraft. These controls are intuitive and enable the user to save time and number of strokes to get to the menu and options they desire.
Aeronautical Charts The real question is will you ever need paper charts again? With the Garmin 696, you can display FAA/NACO IFR charts that are preloaded into the unit. These include approach plates, arrivals, departures, airport diagrams and approaches. With the 7" screen you can view them in full or even zoom in for more detailed reading.
XM Weather Garmin innovated in a huge way with the 496 and 396 weather capabilities, the Garmin 696 builds on those units adding weather overlay to any of the views displayed. XM weather enables NEXRAD radar, satellite images, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, turbulence forecasts, winds aloft, freezing levels and much more. XM WX subscriptions start at $29.99 and can be activated within 15 mn of receiveing your new Garmin 696.
Simulated instrument panel Garmin's simulated instrument panel displays GPS-derived instruments for speed, altitude, vertical speed, bank angle and heading. On the Garmin 696 the simulated instrument panel can be viewed on a split screen on the main page for optimal situational awareness.
Terrain avoidance In addition to having a dedicated terrain page showing nearby terrain and obstacles, the Garmin 696 also includes a view that shows a profile view of upcoming terrain. In any event, you are kept safe by pop up alerts that warn you of impending obstacles and terrain.
AOPA Airport Directory Easily look up taxi services, plan an overnight, choose fuel stops and more with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory included on GPSMAP 696. It offers detailed information for over 5,300 U.S. airports along with the names and phone numbers of thousands of FBOs, plus ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local attractions and more.
Taxiway Maps Garmin SafeTaxiŽ data provides detailed taxiway diagrams and position information for over 850 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the unit, this information helps you navigate unfamiliar airports with confidence and shows your aircraft's exact position on the field.
