Accurate time-keeping is essential for any pilot and in-flight USB charging power is a necessity. The MD93 Series Digital Clock/USB Charger features intuitive operation with four modes: local time, universal time, flight timer and stopwatch. The Dual USB Charging Port supplies the electric current needed to charge any standard or high-power device with a USB interface, while protecting itself and the charging device from short circuit, power surges and over-current potential. Works well in my R44 Raven Helicopter. Good replacement for the old clock and the two USB ports are great to have up front without any extra wiring running all around. My only comment is that since I have the uAvionics Nav Light ADSB out, my NAV lights have to be on all the time and this Clock enters into the night mode when the NAV lights are on and dims the display so during the day its hard to read, hopefully I can find a way around this.
We are just installing the USB charger in our vintage Bonanza. We are planning for another one to be installed in our Taylorcraft which doesnt have a cigar lighter source of electricity. These chargers seem ideal to charge the portables that provide ADS-B In for our aircraft.
The 2020 ADS-B installation required removing some existing King digital display avionics and a slaved (to HSI) ADF indicator head. I didnt want a plate installed in the former indicator head location. After performing several hours of research, I selected the MD-93 because of the desire to have a quality panel mounted device that would provide useful benefits. The clock display provides local time, UTC/Zulu time, flight timer, countdown timer, stopwatch functions and has a 10-year battery back-up power supply. This MD-93 model (6420093-1) USB power supply is the 2.1 amp unit (4.2 total amp) and is the model that I purchased. Using a quality made certified USB cable will allow the iPad to stay fully charged while in use. Note: If you require additional amperage, order the MD-93 model (6420093-2) with the 3.0 amp (6.0 total amp) output. To date, I have around 20 hours of total flight experience with this unit since the late January / early February 2019 installation was completed. The clock display is easily read in full sunlight and also while wearing polarized sunglasses. The night display with the auto-dimming function works well and provides the perfect amount of lighting for night use. The unit can also be connected to the lighting dimmer rheostat. I opted to not have this done during installation to help reduce installation costs. Im very satisfied with this unit.
I installed this in my plane 9 months ago. It has no problems charging my iPhone 7 and iPad Pro at the same time in flight while they are being used. I always buy good Apple cables.
Great clock & great charger! The clock is bright and easy to read. The USB charger keeps my iPad Mini 4 (running ForeFlight throughout the flight) and iPhone X (running Checklist as needed) charged so that after a 3+ hour flight when I land both are fully charged they are ready to go.
I installed this clock last month. Clock can be seen easy in direct sunlight. My iPad pro charges when in use even when cell is left on. No buzz in the headset when its charging. No noise from the lights even with engine off. Recommend this product!
Easy install, you can do it with just two wires (+12v and Ground), if you dont care about manual dimming and the device acting as a Hobbs. It dims automatically anyhow with an internal photocell, which seems to work perfectly. Its 100% readable in bright daylight and dims way, way down to save your night eyes. The flight timer can easily be jumped over to +12v if you want it to. I noticed the LEDs (or LCDs, whatever they are) emitting high pitched noise as they sometimes do, testing it on a battery. Thats at full brightness. The noise goes away as the digits dim. You cant possibly hear it with the engine running anyhow, however. Clock works as intended and saves itself with an internal battery. The stopwatch timer works either counting Up or Down, which is great. The button-feel is great and indicative of a quality product. It doesnt feel cheap. Changing settings is intuitive and barely needs more than a glance at the owners manual. USB charging seems to work as it should. Keeps my Dynon D2 and cell phone topped off. Have not tried it with an iPad yet. Beware, you do your own wiring on this product, with a separate molex crimper. The harness is not premade, sadly. All in all, very pleased with the purchase. Was willing to spend a little more than the Stratus option because I specifically wanted a legal, in-panel clock.
I bought this clock for my plane in April 2016 and I really love it. It holds accuracy incredibly well and I havent had to reset it yet. The display is easily visible on sunny days and dims nicely at night. The USB plugs work well and have no trouble charging my iPad mini while plugged in.
Nice functional unit that net requirements.
The clock works great but the USB is limited to 2.1 amps. It will not charge an Ipad while it is being used. It will charge one slowly if you turn it off. Needs to be minimum of 2.4 amps to charge while in use.
Yes, the MCI MD93 (10-05774) is TSO'd for use in certified aircraft.
No, the USB ports are not lighted. The power input is on the back.
Ground or Power connected to pin 4 will activate the flight timer.
If connecting power, it should be the same power provided to pin 1 (10-32VDC).
No, the 8130 is not included in the box. You must request the document in the shopping cart to receive the 8130, extra charges apply.
PER APPLE: You can use your iPad while charging the battery. However, depending on what you are doing, you many not charge at a fast rate, or you may actually not charge at all, if you are doing graphic intensive applications and your screen is set at 100% brightness.
The unit comes with the mating connector and the mounting screws.
Per the manufacturer the battery has a life span of 10 years, and once it is expired it cannot be replaced by customer. It must be sent in for replacement.
It is certified to TSO C71. Since this unit is not STC'd or PMA'd, you'll have to fill out a 337 major alteration form for this installation. Please refer to your local flight standards district office for more information.
