Overview

The new FAA/PMA approved disc brake conversion for Goodrich wheels and brakes only.

It has been specifically designed to be easily adapted to aircraft in the field by a qualified Airframe Mechanic. The installation requires only standard hand and rivet tools. No modifications are required to be made on the gear leg, or any other part of the aircraft, other than the wheel assembly.

The main components of the retrofit include a brake disc, brake caliper and torque plate. The existing Scott master cylinders provide adequate pressure and volume and need not be replaced.

This conversion has been installed and flight tested on several aircraft.

As usual, the Grove Cub brake conversion is straight forward and brings your airplane up to modern standards. The most challenging part is drilling out the rivets in the old brake drum. Since you are drilling the bucked head side of the rivet, the bit will wander unless it is very sharp. I started with a smaller bit and then stepped up to a bigger one. Once I knocked the head off, a quick blow with a punch and hammer and the old rivet pops right out. Once the drum is loose, get it off the hub and clean the area below where the old drum sat. Place the new disc assembly face down and use the long drill to pop the new holes in it. Make sure to drill the first hole and then lock it with either a cleco or one of the new rivets. You MUST do this because the new disc WILL walk when drilling the new holes. After this is done, I used a long rivet header that was shallowed on the grinder and hit it with my rivet gun. This will peen the tail right over as needed. The rest of the installation is straight forward. You will need a small tubing cutting and a flaring tool or block. I used AN fittings over the automotive stuff as much as I could. It may take some fabrication work below the floor and in the master cylinder area, but is not impossible. The brakes bled very quickly and worked perfect on the first pump. This is a great mod for an old Cub and gives you a little piece of mind for stopping when you want and need to.
